Unfortunately we had to cancel our cruise plans 2 days before we were to leave. So I don't have any personal experiences/photos to share with you. One major recommendation to all that travel: Be sure you purchase cruise insurance, just in case you have to cancel at the last minute. Because we had insurance thru "Insure My Trip", we should be getting a full refund for our cancelled cruise because we cancelled for medical reasons (all is OK, not to worry).

This will probably be my last post to this blog, however, I will leave the blog accessible hoping that it will be of help to future cruisers to Hawaii. For those that were on the Carnival Spirit cruise to Hawaii, 12/2/2011, we are sorry that we didn't get to join in on the fun. May we meet some day on a future cruise.

Feast at Lele Luau in Maui
The following is from their website ... this agency and luau comes highly recommended. Click on the link above for more information.
The Feast At Lele is an amazing all around Polynesian experience. It is the only upscale Maui luau. It's the perfect Maui luau choice for those who want to avoid large crowds and focus on a more intimateThe Feast At Lele setting. Rekindle the romance in a spectacular oceanfront setting.
Guests of the Feast at Lele receive their own table, rather than the family style setting. No long buffet lines, but first rate table service. Enjoy the panoramic views of the islands and Maui's incredible sunset at this famous Maui luau. "Lele" is the ancient Hawaiian name for Lahaina. At this Maui beach location, the Royal family of Maui would feast and entertain.
Featuring a sit-down dinner of five courses from the Pacific Island nations of Hawaii, Tonga, Tahiti and Samoa, The Feast at Lele is a royal tour of the cuisine of Polynesia sharing the spotlight with music and dance from these four Pacific Islands. The evening at the Feast at Lele includes a fresh flower lei greeting and a premium open bar. Menu developed by "Maui's Best Chef" (The Maui News), James McDonald. Reservations needed well in advance!

Helicopter Tours
Any time you book a helicopter tour, safety for you as a passenger should be considered. I found a site that list the helicopter tour agencies in Hawaii and their tour accident statistics. The stats are from the National Transportation Safety Board. Felt it was worth passing on here to my readers:

Road to Hana - Maui
This information was in a review about the Road to Hana: (click here to read more)
To me the worst part of the drive was the section between Hamoa Beach and The Pools of ‘Ohe’o. The road wasn't in bad condition. It was just so narrow, with so many blind switchbacks and 1 lane bridges. Those were the most nerve-racking miles to me. When got to the Pools, we asked the ranger about the road ahead, if she thought it would be better to make the loop back to Kahului or to turn around and go back. She said it would definitely be better to keep going and make the loop, that a few miles weren't paved, but the road straightened out and you make better time without the so many blind curves. It was about 4:30 when we arrived at the pools so we knew it would get dark on us going back. No way did I want to go back the way we came in the dark. So after the Pools, we pressed onward, brave adventurers that we are.
TIP: I had read somewhere to bring some toilet tissue with you on the RTH, because some of the restrooms along the route would run out. I bought some Charmin in a little travel package. You can get them in grocery/drug/discount stores on the isle with all the sample/travel size toiletries and cosmetics. At the Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside Park restrooms we were glad I had brought it!

Franko's Maps
Here's another tip from a review from Oct 2010 (NCL cruise):
TIP: For each island I ordered Franko's Guide Maps from www.frankosmaps.com. These proved invaluable. They also sell them in all the ABC stores and gift shops. In addition to using them as just maps, and therefore allowing me to keep check on Homer and make sure he was not leading us astray, they have TONS of information on all the sites, estimated drive times between points, phone #s, websites, etc. They were very helpful in planning the itinerary and the order we would do things.

Candy Stores in Hilo
"Big Island Candies (585 Hinano St.) was established in 1977, specializing in making macadamia nut candies and cookies. At the door, we were given samples of candy. There was also a counter where you could get a small free cup of coffee.. There’s a big window so you can observe the candy makers in action.
Sugar Coast Candy (274 Kamahameha Ave). The girl liked this one more than the Big Island Candy factory. There were bins and bins of different flavors of taffy so we each selected some to try out. I think the bulk candy was about $11or 12 per pound so very close to what the Candy Factory back home charges."

What to do if you get bumped from your flight
Ever wondered what to do if you got bumped from your flight? Here's an interesting article on CNN that gives details. We always fly in at least one day ahead before a cruise, then if there are any delays we still have time to get to the cruise on time.

"The old Kauai Surf Hotel, presently the Kauai Marriott, was the first hotel to open on Kauai at KALAPAKI BEACH in the late 1950s. The 'Kauai Beach Boys' is Kauai's longest operating beach concession that has been teaching visitors and locals how to best enjoy what the ocean has to offer. These are professional watermen, accomplished surfers, sailors and canoe handlers who make a living doing what they are best at and who are willing to share their knowledge of the ocean with a true spirit of ALOHA.
"The bay fronting KALAPAKI BEACH offers some of the safest waters in the State of Hawaii. The conditions here are well suited for a wide array of Water Sports and Activities such as: Surfing, Kayaking, Snorkeling, Sailing and Outrigger Canoe Paddling. You will find the Kauai Beach Boys right next door to Duke's Restaurant (named after the most illustrious Oahu Surfer Duke Kahanamoku) . "

Chef's Table - Carnival Cruise Lines
Carnival’s Chef’s Table Fine Dining Experience Now Available Fleetwide
Posted on 04 January 2011.
Carnival Cruise Lines has completed the fleetwide rollout of its exquisite and exclusive fine dining experience, The Chef’s Table, which is now available on all 22 of the line’s ships.
Launched as a pilot program last year, this one-of-a-kind culinary experience includes a sumptuous multi-course dinner hosted by one of the line’s master chefs along with a private champagne reception and a personalized tour of the galley.
With The Chef’s Table, a select group of 12 guests enjoy champagne and hors d’ouevres hosted by the ship’s chef de cuisine. The chef then takes the group on a tour to see the galley in operation, providing participants with a unique perspective on Carnival’s extensive food and beverage operations.
The evening concludes with a sumptuous full-service dinner with delicious appetizers, entrees and desserts created by the line’s master chefs. Depending on the vessel, the meal takes place in non-traditional dining venues throughout the ship – the galley, library, conference center, etc.
The program can be booked on board through the ships’ guest information desk. The cost is $75 per person.

Carnival's New 'Behind the Fun' Tours Offer Unique Insight Into Line's Shipboard Operations
Posted on 23 July 2009.
For those who want to get an insider’s look at the inner-workings of a Carnival “Fun Ship,” the line has created Behind the Fun, a guided tour that provides guests with a unique insight into the company’s shipboard operations.
Currently available on the Carnival Valor and Carnival Conquest, the program will be rolled out to all 12 of the line’s ships operating voyages of seven days or longer by the end of September.
The informative three-and-a-half-hour tour offers participants a behind-the-scenes look at a wide range of shipboard venues that are normally off limits to guests. During the tour, key shipboard personnel, including the captain, chief engineer, chef de cuisine and other department heads, share their vast knowledge in their particular area of expertise.
Behind the Fun begins with a stop backstage in the main show lounge where participants can see exactly what goes into creating Carnival’s award-winning revues. The tour then moves on to normally restricted areas such as the laundry room, crew galley and dining room, crew gym, and crew training center.
Next it’s on to the expansive main galley where talented culinary artists prepare upwards of 12,000 meals and snacks a day for Carnival’s guests. The tour also includes a visit to the ship’s bridge and engine control room and informative Q&A sessions with the captain and chief engineer, respectively.
In addition to a comprehensive overview of Carnival’s shipboard operations, Behind the Fun participants receive a number of commemorative gifts, including a custom-made Behind the Fun baseball cap and lanyard, a Team Carnival Picture Perfect book with stunning photographs of Carnival ships and destinations taken by the line’s employees, and complimentary photos with the captain on the bridge.
Behind the Fun tours can be booked through the ships’ shore excursion desk. The cost is $95 per person and capacity is limited to 16 guests per tour. Guests must be 13 or older to participate.
A version of the Behind the Fun tour is planned for Carnival ships that operate itineraries of less than seven days in length.

Great Place to Meet For Sail Away - Carnival Spirit
I think this is a great location, if you have a large group of people, for sail away. There is a bar close by for drinks, soft serve ice cream, and even pizza within walking distance. This is on the Carnival Spirit on the Lido Deck.

Maui - Top 7 things to do
Woman's World Magazine ... 9/19/2011 issue has a 2 page article about Maui. Here's what they recommend seeing:
1. Kapalua Beach: Perfect for swimmers, snorkeling, and sensational views of Molokai Island.
2. Lahaina: Once a whaling port its buildings are circa-1800s which showcase restaurants, small hotels, and boutiques.
3. Wailea Coastal Walk: 1.5 mile walk on the SW coast edges some of the island's prettiest beaches and views. Perfect for sunset viewing.
4. Hana Hwy: Fro an amazing - sometimes hair raising - drive, hop on this 52 mile route with its 600 curves, 54 bridges, and incredible vistas.
5. Upcountry: Cowboy country on Haleakala's lower slopes. Piiholo Ranch - ride the open range. Makawao Town - good place for lunch and don't forget to sample the pineapple champagne at Tedeschi Vineyards.
6. Haleakala: 10,023' dromant volcano. Free ranger led walk.
7. Maui Ocean Center: Hawaii's largest aquarium with a 54' long tunnel that is surround on 3 sides by sharks, stingrays, and other creatures of the deep. If you have kids, they will love the Tidal Pool where they can touch sea urchins and starfish.
What to bring: Swimsuit, wide-brimmed hat, comfy walking shoes.
What to buy: Macadamia blossom honey, Maui Mokka coffee

Perfect Purse For You (Miche Bags)
Hi,
I just signed up last week as a Miche Bag Representative. I absolutely love these bags, they are so versatile and come in 3 main sizes and now a new "hipster" too. The petite, classic, and the prima sizes, you will purchase the bag then purchase the shells you want to go on the outside of the bag. It is so quick and easy to do. The new hipster bag is an all exclusive bag, not a separate shell.
While on board the ship, I always carry a small purse to carry any meds, sail & sign card, tissue, my iPod etc. The hipster can go cross body so perfect for keeping hands free. There are two styles available as of today on My Miche website.
The hipster bags are listed under accessories on my site.
Click on the photos below to enlarge:
Morgan is 8" Tall x 8 1/2" wide and has a handle that is 1/2" wide and has a 21" drop.
Stella is 6" tall and 9 1/2" wide with a handle that is 1/2" wide with a 21" drop.
My Miche Bag Blog is called "Perfect Purse For You". Hope you will stop by to view it. It is a work in progress, but soon will be loaded with LOTS of wonderful photos and information.

Hilo - Driving Around the Island
This information was posted on Cruise Critic today by d76dots:
on Trip Advisor a person had asked about driving from VNP back to Hilo and how those roads would be and and destination expert said to allow an extra hour or so coming back from it because there tends to be lots of accidents that totally close down the road! They also said that you don't want to be driving back in the dark from there because of the wind and if it rains the roads are horrible. They said better to get the earliest start possible and do what you want to do and then get back to the Hilo area so you won't have worries about missing the ship.

Steffan Mann - One of our favorite stores!!!
When we first moved to AZ about 7 years ago, we discovered a GREAT store on one of our drives around the Phoenix, AZ area. The store is called Steffan Mann. When I am looking for travel bags, accessories (wallets, luggage tags, hats, purse hooks, passport covers, RFID blocking items, purse, evening bags, hats, and so much more), I know when we go there they will have what we are looking for. They were amazing in locating the perfect messenger bag for Hal last month for his tablet. The tablet is an odd size, and the messenger bag he originally wanted was too small. The bag we bought from Steffan Mann is perfect. It will hold his tablet as well as miscellaneous items he needs too.
I absolutely love the hand painted purses and shoes Steffan Mann carries in their store. Each one is a unique piece of art. Haven't purchased any just yet, but I look every time we go in. I have purchased the following items in the past from them: Daymakers Purse (security purse with slash proof strap), a convertible hat, purse organizer that blocks RFID, Hal's messenger bag, and today we found the perfect handheld luggage scale. More about the scale further down in this post. Our friend has purchased luggage from them too.
Here's some information from their website:
You can order "some" of their items online by clicking HERE. Remember online shopping is limited. If there is something you want, you can call them to see if it is in their store.
Steffan Mann has been in business for over 25 years. Walking into their store is a true pleasure. You are greeted with welcoming smiles, and owners who are truly pleased to see you. Both Patrice and Victoria are willing to answer questions, do special orders if needed, and even ship to their customers. How many companies go above and beyond like this.
Heys Touch Scale: We purchased this handheld scale today at Steffan Mann. It is small and compact and will easily fit in my purse or carrying on bag when we travel. (Reminder no batteries allowed in checked luggage if you are flying.) It is battery operated and comes with 2 AAA batteries. You turn the scale on (switch on the side), wait till it registers zero, and then attach your bag on the hook to weigh. When bag is weighed the color readout turns to RED to show it has calculated the weight. It can handle up to 99.8 LB/45.3 KG. It automatically will shut off after 60 seconds of non-use, altho recommended to turn off at the switch. The hook on the scale is rubber coated to protect your luggage. It is ergonomic for ease of handling. The numbers are approximately 1" in height on the readout, so very easy to read. Comes in a number of colors too. With the outrageous penalty fees for overweight luggage, this scale is a must have item for any traveler who is flying.
